Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater performs

Jan. 14, 2009

KALAMAZOO--Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, one of the most recognized international ambassadors of American culture, will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a show at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, in Western Michigan University's Miller Auditorium.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater grew from a March 1958 performance at the 92nd Street Young Men's Hebrew Association in New York. The performance, led by Alvin Ailey and a group of young African-American modern dancers, forever changed the perception of American dance.

Today, led by Artistic Director Judith Jamison, the troupe has gone on to perform for an estimated 21 million people in 48 states and 71 countries on six continents, including two residencies in South Africa. The company has earned a reputation as one of the most acclaimed international ambassadors of American culture, promoting the distinctiveness of the African-American cultural experience and the preservation and enrichment of modern American dance.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater at Miller Auditorium is part of the Lake Michigan Mailers Spotlight Series and is sponsored by Coca-Cola and Medawar Jewelers. Tickets are on sale now and range from $40 to $60. They are available by calling (269) 387-2300 or (800) 228-9858, online at millerauditorium.com, or by visiting the Miller Auditorium Ticket Office or Epic Center Box Office in downtown Kalamazoo.
