Merling Trio celebrates CD release

Jan. 16, 2009

KALAMAZOO--The Merling Trio, Western Michigan University's acclaimed strings and piano ensemble, will perform in a CD-release concert at 8:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, in the Dalton Center Recital Hall.

Tickets are $12, $10 for senior citizens and $5 for students. They are available at the door or in advance through the Miller Auditorium Ticket Office at (269) 387-2300. Copies of the trio's new CD, "Postcards in e," will be available for purchase at the show.

The Merling Trio features WMU School of Music faculty members Renata Artman Knific, violin; Bruce Uchimura, cello; and Susan Wiersma Uchimura, piano. Known both for successful commissions of works by contemporary composers and interpretations of the standard repertoire, the trio has performed throughout the United States, Canada and Great Britain, and has released recordings on the Albany, Centaur and Pamplin record labels.

The group is hailed by critics as brilliantly distinguished with remarkable gifts of communication, precision, and an impeccable blend of sound. Atlanta Audio Society noted the trio's "passion for precision, as well as a sensitivity for fluent rhythm and movement," while the London Musical Opinion declared the group's musical artistry "made a powerful impression, with unabashed romanticism and finesse."

Distributed by MSR Classics, "Postcards in e" is available through amazon.com with a list price of $14.99. The disc includes famous works by Eastern European composers Dmitri Shostakovich and Antonin Dvorak. For more information, visit the Merling Trio online.

The Merling Trio at the Dalton Center is made possible through support by the Donald P. Bullock Music Performance Institute of the WMU School of Music. More information about the institute is available at wmich.edu/mus_bpi.
