WMU team third in statewide HR competition

March 11, 2009

KALAMAZOO--A team of business students from Western Michigan University placed third in a statewide competition designed to test students' knowledge of the human resources field.

The student team members, who are enrolled in WMU's Haworth College of Business, are Tyra Harris of Mount Morris, Mich.; Elizabeth Gartner of Midland, Mich; Ashley Heckman of Portage, Mich.; and Evan Escamilla of Lawton, Mich.

"I think the team did exceedingly well given that two of the participants are just starting the human resources management program, and the team was formed two weeks prior to the competition," says Dr. Satish Deshpande, professor in the Department of Management and advisor to the group.

The Michigan HR Games are sponsored by the Society for Human Resource Management and open to all schools in Michigan. The HR Games consist of a series of Jeopardy-style matches between teams where the students are tested in a number of different HR areas such as strategic management, total rewards, employee and labor relations, selection, leadership and risk management.

The competition is timed to help prepare students for the upcoming Professional in Human Resources certification tests.
