Homecoming set for 'Idol' star Matt Giraud

May 5, 2009

KALAMAZOO--A homecoming celebration is set for Thursday evening, May 7, at the Arcadia Festival site in downtown Kalamazoo to honor Western Michigan University graduate and "American Idol" star Matt Giraud. Gates open at 4 p.m., and admission is free.

The celebration begins with live music at 6 p.m. featuring piano players from Monaco Bay, one of several Kalamazoo establishments where Giraud has performed.

Fox 17 news anchor Michele DeSelms will emcee the tribute to Giraud, which begins at 7 p.m. with a performance by local band Drop 35 and remarks by Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell. Giraud will address the crowd, and the tribute will conclude with a performance by Gold Company, WMU's internationally acclaimed vocal jazz ensemble.

A number of downtown restaurants are planning special events for the evening.
