KALAMAZOO--Andrea Perini, a senior member of the Western Michigan University gymnastics team, has been named Academic All-Mid-American Conference for the third year in a row.

Perini, of Sterling Heights, Mich., is an exercise science major and carries a 3.65 grade point average. She competed as an all-arounder in 11 of 12 meets and had the Broncos' highest individual finish at the MAC Championships, tying for fourth on the vault and making a podium appearance with a 9.825.

Perini recorded eight first-place finishes this year: four on the vault, two on the beam and two as an all-arounder. Her season highs were 9.850 on the vault, 9.750 on the bars, 9.725 on the beam, 9.825 on the floor and 38.825 in the all-around. She qualified as an at-large all-arounder for the NCAA Central Regional, tallying the fifth-highest qualifying score with a 38.570.

Academic all-conference honors are given to students who excel in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

This marks the fifth consecutive season that the Bronco gymnastics team has had at least one athlete named Academic All-MAC.
