Eleven business students awarded scholarships

KALAMAZOO--Eleven business students at Western Michigan University have received major scholarships in recognition of their academic excellence, extracurricular activities and leadership qualities.

The scholarships were awarded for the 2009-10 academic year and range from $500 to $2,500. A committee in WMU's Haworth College of Business selected the recipients.

The awards were announced April 3 during the business college's All-College Meeting. A total of more than $9,000 in scholarships was awarded.

TeKeilla L. Carr, of Kalamazoo, received a $500 Friends of David Luce Memorial Scholarship. A senior majoring in business management, she is the daughter of Cheryl M. and Terry L. Carr of Kalamazoo. The Luce Memorial Scholarship is a need-based award that goes to a Haworth College of Business student in good academic standing. The scholarship is funded by an endowment in the name of Friends of Dave Luce.

Timothy S. Cross, of Walled Lake, Mich., received a $700 Haworth College of Business Achievement Award. A junior majoring in finance, he is the son of Jennie O. and Steven H. Cross of Walled Lake. The HCOB Achievement Award is a merit-based award that goes to a student who demonstrates, within the Haworth College of Business, significant academic talent as well as engagement in extracurricular activities. It is supported by donations from WMU staff, faculty and alumni.

Abigail M. Dame, of Kalamazoo, received a $700 Haworth College of Business Achievement Award. Dame is a junior majoring in finance and a member of the Lee Honors College. She is the daughter of Frances M. and David W. Dame of Kalamazoo. The HCOB Achievement Award is a merit-based award that goes to a student who demonstrates, within the Haworth College of Business, significant academic talent as well as engagement in extracurricular activities. It is supported by donations from WMU staff, faculty and alumni.

Geena R. Holman, of Plymouth, Mich., received a $500 Fifth/Third Bank Scholarship. A sophomore majoring in human resource management, she is the daughter of Elise F. and Kevin D. Holman of Plymouth. The Fifth/Third Scholarship is given to a student within the Haworth College of Business who not only shows outstanding academic excellence, but also has participated in community service. This scholarship is supported by Fifth/Third Bank.

Shannon M. Lapsley, of Saline, Mich., received a $500 William T. and Terri L. Sturtevant Business Scholarship. A senior majoring in sales and business marketing, she is the daughter of Cinda R. and John T. Lapsley of Saline. The Sturtevant Business Scholarship is a need-based scholarship that goes to a student within the Haworth College of Business who has a minimum 3.3 grade point average and is a full-time undergraduate student.

Sarah J. Lutz, of Portage, Mich., received a $500 Norman Clark Perkins Memorial Business Scholarship. A senior majoring in accountancy and a member of the Lee Honors College, she is the daughter of Debra J. and David I. Lutz Jr. of Portage. The Perkins Scholarship is a merit-based award that goes to a student who demonstrates, within the Haworth College of Business, significant academic excellence. The scholarship is funded by an endowment in the memory of Norman Clark Perkins.

Benjamin T. McCann, of Kalamazoo, received a $900 Alfred Pugno Business Scholarship. A senior majoring in accountancy, he is the son of Betsy A. Depuydt of Baroda, Mich., and Paul H. McCann of Colorado Springs, Colo. The Pugno Scholarship is based on academic achievement within the Haworth College of Business and goes to a student whose grade point average is in the top five percent for the college. It is supported by an endowment given in memory of Pugno, a Fremont, Mich., businessman and the first president of the WMU Alumni Association.

Kallista T. Minor, of Ypsilanti, Mich., received a $1,000 Dr. Bernadine P. Branshaw Scholarship. A senior majoring in accountancy, she is the daughter of Tina M. Robinson of Ypsilanti and Barry Minor of Texas. The Branshaw Scholarship is given to a student who exemplifies outstanding academic excellence and leadership qualities. It is named in memory of Branshaw, who was a WMU professor of business information systems.

David M. Perez, of Troy, Mich., received a $2,500 Kalamazoo Gazette Scholarship. A junior majoring in sales and business marketing, he is the son of Deanna M. and Manny J. Perez of Troy. The Kalamazoo Gazette Scholarship is a need-based award that is granted to a student who demonstrates academic excellence within the Haworth College of Business. It is funded by the Kalamazoo Gazette, a daily newspaper.

Manuel E. Romero, of Detroit, received a $500 Fifth/Third Bank Scholarship. A junior majoring in sales and business marketing as well as Spanish, he is the son of Socorro C. Romero of Detroit. The Fifth/Third Bank Scholarship is given to a Haworth College of Business student who not only shows outstanding academic excellence, but also has participated in community service. It is supported by Fifth/Third Bank.

Kevin S. Stuart, of Portage, Mich., received a $900 Alfred Pugno Business Scholarship. A senior majoring in accountancy, he is the son of Kerry M. and Kenneth C. Stuart of Portage. The Pugno Scholarship is based on academic achievement within the Haworth College of Business and goes to a student whose grade point average is in the top five percent for the college. It is supported by an endowment given in memory of Pugno, a Fremont, Mich., businessman and the first president of the WMU Alumni Association.
