Foreign language scholarships go to 46 students

KALAMAZOO--Forty-six Western Michigan University students have been honored for their achievements by the Department of Foreign Languages. The department awarded scholarships totaling more than $19,000 at its Honors and Awards Day in April, an annual celebration that recognizes the achievements of outstanding students of foreign languages.
Foreign languages honorees
- Rebekah Achtenberg of Farmington Hills, Michigan, was awarded a $540 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue her studies in Japan.
- Elizabeth Akers of Monroe, Michigan, was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, given to a foreign language major or minor to study abroad for at least one semester.
- Alyssa Arseneau of Champion, Michigan, was awarded the Margaret H. Brooks Award, an award given to an exemplary student of French, to continue her language studies. She also received an Excellence in Italian Award, an award given to a student for exemplary academic achievement in the study of Italian language.
- Ashley Aubermann of Coloma, Michigan, was awarded an Excellence in Arabic Award, an award given to a student for exemplary academic achievement in the study of Arabic language.
- Madeleine Bein of Novi, Michigan, received the Frances E. Noble Prize for Excellence in French, an award given to the student with the highest grade point average in French among graduating French majors.
- Scott Bennett of Marshall, Michigan, was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major or minor to study abroad for at least one semester.
- Daniel Benson of Kalamazoo was awarded an Excellence in Russian Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Russian.
- Joshua Boardman of Stevensville, Michigan, was awarded the Victor Coutant Award in Classics, an award given to an outstanding student studying Latin or Greek.
- Martin Bragalone of Chelsea, Michigan, was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major or minor to study abroad for at least one semester.
- Jacques Brouillette of Mundelein, Illinois, was presented the Excellence in Chinese Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Chinese.
- William Cain of Portage, Michigan, received the Excellence in Russian Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Russian.
- Dawn Chan of Houston, Texas, was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major or minor to study abroad for at least one semester.
- Dawn Cheikh of Grand Rapids, Michigan, was awarded an Excellence in Arabic Award, an award given to a student for exemplary academic achievement in the study of Arabic language.
- Sara Daniels Cheikh of Grand Rapids, Michigan, was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major or minor to study abroad for at least one semester.
- Laura Citino of Ypsilanti, Michigan, was awarded the $1,250 President's Award for Study Abroad, given to a foreign language major or minor to study abroad for at least one semester.
- Thalea Davis of Tucker, Georgia, was awarded the $1,\250 President's Award for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major or minor to study abroad for at least one semester.
- Anna Filipova of Au Gres, Michigan, was awarded an Excellence in Italian Award, an award given to a student for exemplary academic achievement in the study of Italian language.
- Carly Froomkin of Youngstown, Ohio, was awarded a $540 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue her studies in Egypt.
- Zachary Gagnon of Alpena, Michigan, was awarded the Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship in German, an award given to a foreign language major who demonstrates outstanding academic performance and potential. Gagnon also received the full-ride Exchange Program Scholarship to the Free University of Berlin to pursue his studies of German language and literature.
- Shelby Gilson of Washington, Michigan, was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major or minor to study abroad for at least one semester.
- Kelsey Grabill of Newaygo, Michigan, was presented the Excellence in Chinese Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Chinese.
- Monica Harmsen of Kalamazoo was awarded an Excellence in Russian Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Russian.
- Andrew Hnatow of Romeo, Michigan, was awarded a $540 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue his studies in France. Hnatow also received the Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship in French, an award given to a foreign language major who demonstrates outstanding academic perfrmance and potential.
- Chad Holmes of Plainwell, Michigan, was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major or minor to study abroad for at least one semester.
- Gabe Johnson of Kalamazoo was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major or minor to study abroad for at least one semester.
- Stephanie Jones of Woodhaven, Michigan, was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major or minor to study abroad for at least one semester.
- Matthew Kelly of Elmhurst, Illinois, was presented the Excellence in Chinese Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Chinese.
- Frederick Klug of Kalamazoo was awarded the Elizabeth Giedeman Award in Classics, an award given to a student who exhibits outstanding work in the study of the classics.
- Martha Knuth of Portage, Michigan, was presented the Excellence in Chinese Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Chinese.
- Michelle LaCharite of Clinton, Michigan, received the Prix d'Honneur de l'Ambassadeur de France, an award given by the French Embassy to the outstanding student of French in the graduating class.
- Justin Losey of Kalamazoo was awarded an Excellence in Russian Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Russian.
- Brett Lovell of Lake Orion, Michigan, was awarded the Preis der Bundesrepublik, an award given to a student who exhibits outstanding work in the study of German.
- Victoria Mansberger of Kalamazoo was chosen as the WMU Presidential Scholar in Foreign Languages, a University distinction awarded to students who demonstrate the most outstanding classroom performance. Mansberger also received the Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship in Latin, an award given to a foreign language major who demonstrates outstanding academic performance and potential.
- Laura McGrane of Washington, Michigan, was awarded a $540 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue her studies in Germany.
- Eric Mendes of Grand Rapids, Michigan, was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major or minor to study abroad for at least one semester.
- Melissa Pierce of Saline, Michigan, received an Excellence in Italian Award, an award given to a student for exemplary academic achievement in the study of Italian language.
- Nicholas Rich of Holly, Michigan, was awarded an Excellence in Japanese Award, an award given to a student for exemplary academic achievement in the study of Japanese language.
- Viola Riddle of Baker, Florida, was awarded the Herman E. Rothfuss Award for Excellence in German, an award given to a student who demonstrates outstanding academic performance and potential.
- Caitlin Rozich of Ionia, Michigan, was awarded an Excellence in Russian Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Russian.
- Desiree Scobey of Schoolcraft, Michigan, was awarded an Excellence in Japanese Award, an award given to a student for exemplary academic achievement in the study of Japanese language.
- Jesse Shaw of Kalamazoo was awarded a $540 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue his studies in Japan.
- Rodger Swan of Battle Creek, Michigan, was awarded a $540 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue his studies in Japan. Swan was also awarded the Excellence in Japanese Award, an award given to a student for exemplary academic achievement in the study of Japanese language.
- Chelsea Thorpe of Kalamazoo was awarded a $540 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue her studies in Egypt.
- Eric Ware of Davison, Michigan, was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major or minor to study abroad for at least one semester. Ware also received the Eunice E. Kraft Award in Classics, an award given to an outstanding student studying Latin or Greek.
- Stephen Wood of Traverse City, Michigan, was the recipient of the Prix de l'Alliance Française, an award given to a student who demonstrates exemplary student involvement in French activities.
- Alvaro Zarco of Covert, Michigan, was awarded a $540 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue his studies in Egypt.
