New dual-use tower to be installed on campusJune 5, 2009 KALAMAZOO--On June 4, Western Michigan University's Board of Trustees approved having the University enter into a new lease agreement that will bring a new dual-use tower to the corner of Valley Drive and Howard Street on the WMU campus. The five-year lease agreement, which also includes four five-year extension options, is with MetroPCS Michigan Inc., which is part of Dallas-based MetroPCS Communications Inc. The company will erect a 160-foot flagpole that also will serve as a tower for locating cell phone transmission equipment that will help meet the demands of students' increasing reliance on electronic communication devices. At the top of the pole, a large Bronco flag will be installed. The lease agreement calls for MetroPCS to pay $1,500 per month and will include a 10 percent increase at the end of each five-year term. The lease is effective for the summer or fall of 2009, with the exact start date still to be determined. Media contact: Cheryl Roland, (269) 387-8400, cheryl.roland@wmich.edu WMU News |
