Raymond L. Janes

Nov. 25, 2009

Dr. Raymond L. Janes, a longtime Western Michigan University faculty member and administrator, died Nov. 19 in Lansing, Mich. He was 78.

Janes joined the faculty in 1957 and left in 1960 to work on his doctorate. He returned in 1963 as chair of the Department of Paper and Printing Science and Engineering, a post he held until 1977.

A noted pulp and paper researcher, Janes retired as professor emeritus of paper and printing science and engineering in 1995 after 35 years of service to the University.

He was honored in 1977 by being named WMU's first Gottesman Professor, a professorial chair recognizing outstanding contributions and dedicated service to the University's Paper Technology Foundation as well as its paper and printing science and engineering department.

His other firsts included leading the list of graduates of WMU's paper technology program who have been named head of that department and the list of those alumni who have been appointed regular members of the paper technology faculty.

Prior to coming to WMU, Janes was a research engineer for Potlatch Forests Inc. in Lewiston, Idaho, for two years. He earned a bachelor's degree from WMU in 1953, a master's degree from Lawrence University in 1955, and a doctoral degree from Lawrence in 1968.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at Hospice of Lansing-Stoneleigh, 3411 Stoneleigh Drive, Lansing. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lansing-Stoneleigh or the donor's local Humane Society.
