Free concert features acclaimed faculty trioJan. 29, 2010 KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's acclaimed Merling Trio will perform a "French Fest" of chamber music in a special pre-Valentine's Day event Saturday, Feb. 13. The show begins at 8:15 p.m. in the Dalton Center Recital Hall on WMU's main Kalamazoo campus. Admission is open to the public free of charge. The Merling Trio features WMU School of Music faculty members Renata Artman Knific, violin; Bruce Uchimura, cello; and Susan Wiersma Uchimura, piano. The group's Feb. 13 performance includes the Debussy "Sonata for Violin and Piano" and the tour-de-force Ravel "Piano Trio in A Minor." It also features guest artist Debra Fayroian, member of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and director of Chamber Music North in Traverse City, Mich., in a performance of the Debussy "Sonata for Cello and Piano." The Merling Trio was founded in 1988 and quickly established itself as a premiere ensemble. Known both for successful commissions of works by contemporary composers and interpretations of the standard repertoire, the trio has performed throughout the United States, Canada and Great Britain, and has released a number of critically-acclaimed recordings.
