Student workers honored in weeklong celebration

Feb. 1, 2010

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University will recognize some 4,000 student employees during the 24th annual Student Employee Appreciation Week, Monday through Friday, Feb. 15-19.

Career and Student Employment Services, which sponsors the week, is accepting nominations through Tuesday, Feb. 9, for the awards it bestows in conjunction with the observance.

Brenda Case-Parris, appreciation week coordinator, notes that WMU students may nominate their supervisors for the Supervisor of the Year award while faculty and staff members across campus may nominate students for the Gary L. Belleville Student Employee of the Year award.

The 2010 award winners and nominees will be announced as well as recognized during a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, in the Bernhard Center's West Ballroom. The awards program will begin at 3:30 p.m.

"Student Employee Appreciation Week pays tribute to WMU's single largest employee group for the many ways its members contribute to the University," Case-Parris says, adding that this year's theme is "What's Behind the "W"? Student Employees Are."

Career and Student Employment Services encourages all faculty and staff members to submit award nominations and to thank their student employees in some way during appreciation week.

While supplies last, the career services office will provide small appreciation gifts to those who wish to use them as thank-yous for their student workers. Gift requests must be received by Monday, Feb. 8. The office also makes available a template that can be used to create certificates of appreciation, and has developed a list of suggestions for other ways to thank student employees.
