Area businesses warned of T-shirt scam

March 2, 2010

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University is warning Kalamazoo area businesses about a scam involving a Texas company that is using WMU's name to solicit advertising and T-shirt sales.

"Jam Sports Marketing is in no way affiliated with Western Michigan University, nor is it authorized to perform any work on the university's behalf," says Bob D'Amelio, WMU's assistant athletic director for sports marketing, media relations and trademark licensing.

D'Amelio says area businesses have been contacted by the company to purchase advertising on a T-shirt the company claims will be distributed to students. Any area businesses or individuals that have been contacted about advertising with Jam Sports, should contact D'Amelio directly at robert.damelio@wmich.edu or (269) 387-3098.

WMU is also working with Licensing Resource Group of Holland, Mich., to legally force Jam Sports Marketing to cease using the University's trademarks, D'Amelio reports.

"The name, seal, mascot and other marks associated with Western Michigan University are trademarks, and any commercial use of these marks must be licensed through the University. Licensing Resource Group manages the Western Michigan University trademark licensing program," D'Amelio says.
