Acclaimed foreign film comes to Little TheatreMarch 5, 2010 KALAMAZOO--Kalamazoo Film Society presents "Broken Embraces," starring Penelope Cruz and Lluis Homar, Friday through Sunday, March 12-14, in the Little Theatre at Western Michigan University. Show times are 7 and 9:30 p.m. Friday; 4:30, 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday; and 2:30, 5 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. General admission is $5 and $3 for students with a valid ID. "Broken Embraces" is a moving story about a successful film director, Mateo Blanco (Homar), who tries to bury his past after losing his sight and the love of his life, Lena (Cruz), in a violent car crash. Present day, Harry Caine is an attractive blind man who enjoys his life and his work as a writer. But, Harry has a complex and devastating past that he keeps hidden from everyone, including himself. One night, fueled by a tangle of drugs, Harry's assistant asks him about the man who went by the name of Mateo Blanco. Harry recalls the tragic story of his former life--something he had forced from his memory years ago. Written and directed by Pedro Almodovar, the 2009 film is shown in English and Spanish with English subtitles. It has a run time of 127 minutes, and is rated R for adult language, sexual content and some drug use.
