Students collect school supplies for Detroit classroom

KALAMAZOO--A drive to collect school supplies and a fundraiser bake sale are being held on the campus of Western Michigan University to promote the success of a kindergarten classroom in Detroit's Brightmoor neighborhood.

WMU social work students are collecting school supplies through 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, for the "Supplying Children for Success" promotion. Donation boxes are located in the atrium of the Health and Human Services Building, in the School of Social Work office and in the Bernhard Center in the Student Organization Center.

Items being sought include:

  • Erasers
  • Glue sticks
  • Small bottles of glue
  • Child size scissors
  • Markers, fat and fine tip
  • Colored pencils
  • Drawing paper
  • Colored paper, construction or copy
  • Art supplies, including glitter glue and foam cutouts

Bake sale

The group also will hold a bake sale fundraiser from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, in the atrium at the Health and Human Services Building. Both events are sponsored by students in Dr. Gary Mathews's social work class and the Peace Center.
