Patricia S. Williams

April 26, 2010

Patricia S. Williams, a retired Western Michigan University staff member, died March 30 in Kalamazoo. She was 86.

Williams came to WMU in 1970 as a secretary in the Department of Mathematics. She transferred to the Division of Student Affairs in 1973, and retired in 1988 after nearly two decades of service to the University.

For many years, Williams worked for Thomas E. Coyne, emeritus vice president for student affairs. She had risen to the level of administrative assistant II at the time of her retirement. Coyne describes her as an elegant, gracious lady and a dedicated staff member who deeply cared for students, was extremely efficient and had an excellent decorating sense.

Williams set up Coyne's office when it moved to the Seibert Administration Building, but also was instrumental in decorating and selecting photographs for the Martin Luther King Room in the Bernhard Center.

Her interests were widespread, but she especially enjoyed her patronage with the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and the Kalamazoo Garden Council.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial celebration will follow in the near future. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kalamazoo Humane Society.
