Trustees approve retirements, other personnel items

KALAMAZOO--The retirements of seven faculty members and 28 staff members were along with three faculty resignations were approved by the Western Michigan University Board of Trustees at its July 23 meeting.

Trustees also added to this year's lists of faculty members who have been granted promotions and sabbatical leaves, as well as signed off on several changes in departmental affiliations and returns to the faculty.

Retiring faculty members

All of the faculty members who are retiring are doing so with emeritus status. Their names, positions, years of continuous service and effective dates of retirement are:

  • Dr. Thomas C. Bailey, professor of English, 44-1/2 years, effective Dec. 31, 2014
  • Dr. E. Rozanne Elder, professor of history, 49-1/2 years, effective April 30, 2015
  • Dr. Nora Faires, professor of history, 10-1/2 years, effective Dec. 12, 2010
  • Dr. Richard L. Hodges (change in retirement date), associate professor of accountancy, 26-1/2 years, effective April 30, 2010
  • Richard J. Keaveny, professor of art, 42-1/2 years, effective April 30, 2011
  • Dr. Cheryl Lyon-Jenness, master faculty specialist in history, 18 years, effective June 30, 2011
  • Dr. Michael R. Stoline, professor of statistics, 43-1/2 years, effective May 3, 2011
  • Dr. Von H. Washington, professor of theatre, 23-1/2 years, effective April 30, 2012

Faculty promotions and sabbaticals

Trustees also promoted two assistant professors to associate professor and approved three sabbatical leaves for Aug. 9-Dec. 12, 2010. Receiving promotions are:

  • Robert Adam Manley, Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, effective March 26, 2010
  • Dr. Jagjit S. Saini, Department of Accountancy, effective Aug. 9, 2010

Granted sabbatical leaves are:

  • Dr. Thomas L. Kent, professor of English
  • Dr. Joyce M. Kubiski, interim director and associate professor of art
  • Dr. Lewis Pyenson, professor of history

Other personnel items

In addition, the department affiliations for two faculty members has changed.

  • Dr. Mustafa K. Mirzeler, an associate professor with tenure, is moving from the Department of Comparative Religion to the Department of English, effective Aug. 9, 2010.
  • Dr. Evelyn Winfield, an associate professor with tenure, is moving from the University Counseling and Testing Center to the Department of Physician Assistant and the Specialty Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse, effective June 14, 2010. Winfield also is stepping down as director of the counseling and testing center, effective June 13, 2010.

Other administrators returning to the faculty are:

  • Dr. J. Kevin Corder, from chair of the Department of Political Science to professor of political science, effective June 14, 2010
  • Dr. David P. Cowan, from chair of the Department of Biological Sciences to professor of biological sciences, effective Aug. 9, 2010
  • James A. Hopfensperger, from senior associate dean of the College of Fine Arts to professor of art, effective Aug. 15, 2010
  • Dr. Joyce M. Kubiski, from interim director of the Department of Art to associate professor of art, effective July 1, 2010
