Tribute to football coaches unveiled Saturday

Sept. 8, 2010

KALAMAZOO--A Head Football Coaches Tribute Wall will be unveiled in the Bill Brown Alumni Football Center at Western Michigan University's Waldo Stadium just prior to the Broncos' home opener against Nicholls State University.

Photo of Cubit, Harbaugh, Darnell, Merle Schlosser, Uselac, Molde and Doolittle. Unveiling of the collage featuring seven head football coaches will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, one hour before kickoff of the annual CommUniverCity Night football game. The collage was created by artist Kristy Darnell Battani of Austin, Texas, the daughter of one of the coaches honored.

Participating in the event are current head coach Bill Cubit and former head football coaches Gary Darnell, Jack Harbaugh, Al Molde and Elliot Uzelac. They will be joined by family members representing former head coaches Bill Doolittle and John Gill.

Bill Brown, a 1953 graduate of WMU for whom the football center is named, promoted the creation of the coaches tribute. Both the center and the tribute were funded by private gifts from Brown, other football alumni and Bronco fans.

Contributions are being accepted for the Head Football Coaches Tribute Wall and may be made to the Mike Gary Athletic Fund through the WMU Foundation, 1903 W. Michigan Ave., Kalamazoo MI 49008-5403.
