KALAMAZOO--Several roads and parking lots on the main campus of Western Michigan University will be closed for brief periods Friday and Saturday, Oct. 1-2, to accommodate two of the more popular annual events of WMU Homecoming--Friday's Soap Box Derby and Saturday's Campus Classic 5K and 1K races.

  • Traffic also will be halted periodically on North Dormitory Road.
  • Access to Sindecuse Health Center will be available by passing through Lots 47 and 40 in front of Bigelow and Sangren halls.

Campus Classic, Saturday, Oct. 2

West Michigan Avenue in front of the Bernhard Center and the parking lots along that section of West Michigan will be closed to all traffic from 6 to 11 a.m. for the 12th annual Campus Classic 5K and 1K races. This includes parking areas in front of the Bernhard Center, the Oaklands, Henry Hall, Seibert Administration Building and Kanley Chapel.

Most other affected roads and lots will be closed for about one hour at varying times between 8 and 10 a.m. during the actual running of the 1K and 5K events.

Access will be limited to nearly every building on the central West Campus during the 5K race. Roads and lots will be opened to traffic as soon as the last runners and walkers have cleared the adjacent parts of the race route.

A map of the race route is available at wmich.edu/race, as well as online registration through Thursday, Sept. 30.
