The contest is open to all current undergraduate and graduate students at WMU. To enter, create an original artwork highlighting the financial, environmental or social benefits of WMU's EcoMug program and deliver it to the Office for Sustainability, 1313 Faunce Student Services Building, by 5 p.m. Thursday, March 24.

Contestants may use their choice of media including but not limited to: photography, painting, sculpture and graphic design. The EcoMug must be featured in all entries, which will be judged by the Office for Sustainability in two categories:

  • Most Artistic
  • Most Persuasive (best representation of the EcoMug benefits)

Prizes will be awarded as follows:

  • Grand prize for the best overall: $300 gift certificate to the WMU Bookstore.
  • Best in "Most Artistic" category: $100 gift certificate to the WMU Bookstore.
  • Best in "Most Persuasive" category: $100 gift certificate to the WMU Bookstore.

WMU's EcoMug project was launched in fall 2009 to reduce campus waste and save money by minimizing the number of disposable cups used across campus. The reusable stainless-steel travel mug is given free of charge to all incoming first-year and transfer students at WMU. Those who use it receive special discounts at campus cafés and local businesses. The National Wildlife Federation recently lauded the project as a top contributor to campus environmental sustainability.
