HR offers retirement-planning series

Update--Oct. 31--The retirement-related program on "Alzheimer's and Elder Care," originally scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 10, has been postponed until spring.

KALAMAZOO--Human Resources will be offering six retirement-related programs in a 2011 seminar series designed exclusively for Western Michigan University faculty and staff. The programs will be conducted by Sanford Advisory Services, which provides administrative and consulting services for the WMU retirement plan to all employees.

Each seminar will focus on one aspect of retirement planning. All six will take place in the Bernhard Center and will be presented at 9 a.m. and again at 4 p.m. to accommodate differing schedules. Employees may attend all of the seminars or any individual seminar.

Thursday, March 31--"Asset Allocation and Market Update" will explain asset allocation and diversification and will include a current market update.

Thursday, April 21--"Long-term Care Insurance and Life Insurance" will focus on insurance issues.

Tuesday, May 17--"Medicare and Social Security Benefits" will cover taking distributions at retirement and how that will affect your tax liability.

Tuesday, Sept. 20--"Estate Planning for the Middle Class" will deal with estate planning issues such as wills, trust, powers of attorney and patient advocates.

Wednesday, Oct. 12--"Identity Theft" will offer tips on protecting yourself from identity theft.
