Don Sanderson is the chief merchandising and marketing officer for Meijer, the Grand Rapids. Michigan-based retailer that operates more than 500 super centers, neighborhood markets and Express locations throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
Under Sanderson’s leadership, Meijer launched numerous corporate initiatives, including the expansion of the premier Frederik’s by Meijer brand, which reflects the high standards and unique vision of the company's namesake, Fred Meijer, and revamped mPerks, the retailer’s digital coupon and rewards program, which now allows customers to earn points on every dollar spent in a more engaging and personalized way. Sanderson also helped lead the retailer’s partnership with Flashfood, including the addition of SNAP benefits in Meijer stores, and the launch of Meijer Grocery, a new store format focused on providing a streamlined shopping experience for day-to-day needs in a smaller footprint.
Previously, Sanderson served as senior vice president of merchandising, foods, softlines, procurement and small formats, leading all merchandising functions in those departments, including product selection and development, sourcing, pricing and presentation.
Before joining Meijer, Sanderson spent seven years at Target where he held a variety of positions within merchandising, merchandise presentation and negotiation. He began his career in the automotive industry, where he worked as a buyer for both Honda of America and Ford Motor Company.
Sanderson received his bachelor’s degree in marketing from Michigan State University and earned his master’s degree in business from the University of Notre Dame.
