Overview

This report shows six-year graduation rates for the ten most recent FTIAC student cohorts for which data are available.

FTIACs (First Time in Any College): FTIAC students are defined as all full-time, first-year degree-seeking students enrolled as of fall census. First-year students who enroll during the Summer II session and are enrolled as full-time, degree-seeking students for the Fall session are counted as FTIACs. FTIACs are grouped into cohorts based on the year of their arrival. Students who completely withdraw from classes before receiving any WMU credit may be counted as FTIACs again when they re-enroll at a later fall term.

Graduation: A student that has received a Bachelor’s degree from any program within the first six academic years (Fall through Summer II) of beginning at WMU are considered to have graduated for the purposes of this report.

Exceptions: Following procedures outlined by the Consortium for Student Graduation Data Exchange (CSRDE), students who are deceased prior to Fall census are removed from the denominator of graduation calculations (i.e. the initial cohort or sub-cohort size is reduced by the number of deceased students).

Sources: Graduation data for each term are sourced from snapshots at the end of each term once degree data for that term are finalized by the registrar’s office. The determination of FTIACs reported here are sourced from snapshots of WMU’s Banner Operational Data Store (ODS) taken at Fall census. Any students not counted as FTIACs once Fall Census data are finalized will not be included in this report. However, some data presented here are not captured in the Banner census snapshots. The exceptions are:

  • Pell eligibility: Pell eligibility is generally determined for FTIACs prior to Fall census but eligibility data are subject to change throughout the year. Updates to student’s Pell Eligibility made after fall census will be reflected when the report is updated.
  • Student cohort: these designations are typically set at Fall census and typically remain unchanged through time. Any updates to student cohorts made after fall census will be reflected when the report is updated.

Data breakdowns

In addition to showing the overall university-wide graduation (see Overall tab), the tabs at the top of the page show graduation breakdowns by:

  • primary ethnicity
  • gender
  • high school GPA (in 0.5 grade point intervals)
  • residency by location (Michigan resident, US non-resident, and international)
  • college
  • Pell eligibility
  • credit hours enrolled (at Fall census)
  • campus housing (‘On’ vs. ‘Off’ campus)
  • top 10 Michigan counties by enrollment
  • student cohorts
  • other student groups
    • student Employees
    • first generation students
    • Honors College Students
    • underrepresented minorities
    • veteran and military students

How to read this report

Each of the above tabs contains two sections: 6-year Graduation Rate Summary and 6-year Graduation Rate by Cohort.

  • 6-year Graduation Rate Summary: shows aggregate 6-year graduation rate data for each sub-cohort over the last ten years, including 3-, 5- and 10-year averages and 1-, 5-, and 10-year changes in graduation. Changes in graduation rate are the change (in percentaeg points) for the most recent year, across the last 5, and across the last 10 years (inclusive):
    • the ‘5-year’ change is between then 2013 and 2017 cohorts
    • ‘10-year’ change statistics are not currently available
  • 6-year Graduation Rate by Cohort: includes a time-series chart showing the year-by-year change in graduation rate for the selected sub-cohort. The charts also indicate the overall WMU graduation rate over the same time-period for comparison. The neighboring table shows the number of FTIACS in the sub-cohort, the percentage of FTIACs in the sub-cohort, and the sub-cohort graduation rate for each cohort year.

Primary Ethnicity

6-year Graduation Rate Summary

Notes: In 2010 students were given the opportunity to update their self-reported races after the addition of the Native Hawaiian and Two or More Races categories. Consequently, aggregations of pre-2010 and post-2010 ethnicity data are not valid, and only the 3-year average and change for the most recent cohort are currently available. Average cohort size is calculated from post-2010 cohorts. Three-year average is weighted by cohort size. pp = percentage points

Notes on Primary Ethnicity

The report shows the breakdown by a student’s self-reported primary ethnicity as of census. Ethnicity groups are derived from the federal reporting categories as defined by the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).

  • international students are reported under the International category whether or not they report as being a member of an additional race group
  • non-international students who choose not to provide ethnicity information are reported under the Unknown category
  • students who report as Hispanic are counted under the Hispanic category regardless of whether or not they report being a member of an additional race group
  • otherwise…
    • students who report as being a member of single race group are reported under that ethnicity
    • non-Hispanic students who report as being a member of multiple racial groups (e.g. White and Asian) are counted under the Two or More Races category

Notes on Pell Eligibility

Pell eligibility is determined using a student’s expected family contribution (PELL EFC) as calculated from their FAFSA and Federal guidelines on Pell award amounts. The 2018-19 PELL EFC cutoff for eligibility for a full-time student is $5,586.

Incoming FTIACs can be divided into three distinct groups based on the Pell eligibility status:

  • Pell-eligible: students whose EFC falls below the cutoff
  • Non-eligible: students whose EFC falls above the cutoff
  • Unknown: students who did not submit a FAFSA

Note that the Unknown group above is a mix of students who did not submit a FAFSA because they did not need aid, were not eligible (e.g. international), or otherwise forgot or missed the relevant deadline for submission.

Lastly, the numbers shown here may differ slightly from the number of student who were actually offered Pell awards in any given year.

Notes on Student Cohorts

This tab shows the breakdown by official student cohorts as defined in the Banner Information System.

  • Only students who are also FTIACs are reported here. Cohort totals may not match totals reported here if non-FTIAC students are included in cohort (including students who start in Summer I).

  • Students are included in a cohort if they are assigned the cohort at any point while at WMU, not just if they are assigned to the cohort during their first fall term.

  • By definition, students can be included in more than one cohort listed above, so the cohorts should not be considered as mutually exclusive groups.

  • Similarly, student cohorts are not created to be compared directly with one another. Consequently, the ‘Graduation Summary Table’ above is presented in alphabetical order only, and the ‘Graduation by Year’ plots show only the data for the selected cohort (as well as the overall WMU graduation).

Cohorts included (click name for website):

  • College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP): The Western Michigan University College Assistance Migrant Program is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Migrant Education. The program’s goal is to provide supportive services to migrant and seasonal farmworkers or their dependents by assisting them in the successful completion of their first year of college and persistence toward degree attainment.

  • Fall Welcome: Fall Welcome is a three-day program that assists first-year and transfer students with their academic and social transitions to WMU. Building on the foundation created at summer orientation, Fall Welcome will connect students with WMU, other students, faculty, and staff. All first-year students are required to attend Fall Welcome and new transfer students are encouraged to register and attend.

  • First-Year Experience (FYE): First-Year Seminar is a transition course for first-year students. This two-credit hour course gives first-year students a shared opportunity to successfully make the academic and social transition to university life. Seminar activities and programs are designed to prepare students for their first year and beyond at WMU. Students receive instruction in the course from a WMU faculty or staff member and an upper-level student leader who both facilitate this unique university experience.

  • Kalamazoo Promise Program: program to increase retention and graduation rates for Kalamazoo Promise recipients who attend Western Michigan University by providing direct support from campus coaches, university departments and community resources, including parents, Kalamazoo Public School staff and business partners.

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Student Scholars Academy: The Martin Luther King Jr. Student Scholars Academy is a four-tier comprehensive program designed to offer academic, social, and professional development support and services to assist program participants from the first year through graduation. Each tier is designed to address particular developmental milestones associated with that phase of each student’s matriculation.

  • Seita Scholarship: The Seita Scholarship is a scholarship that supports Western Michigan University students who have lived some or all of their teenage years in foster care. This WMU scholarship is named to honor Dr. John Seita, who is a three-time alumnus of WMU.

  • STEM Talent Expansion Program (STEP): In 2004, through a very competitive process, Western Michigan University was awarded a STEM Talent Expansion Program (STEP) grant from the National Science Foundation to implement “Student and Faculty Learning Communities to Increase Graduation Rates in STEM Disciplines” (award #0336581). STEP included placing students in a cohort learning community. Progressing through the first year of college as a cohort allows students to build social and academic connections with each other, thus easing the transition from high school to college and helping students form study groups.

  • TRiO Student Success Program (SSP) : TRiO Student Success Program is a learning community funded by the U.S. Department of Education that helps first-generation, income eligible and students with disabilities complete their baccalaureate degrees.

Notes on Student Groups

This tab shows the breakdown into miscellaneous student groups and designations.

  • Only students who are also FTIACs are reported here. Group totals may not match totals reported here if non-FTIAC students are added to the group after census.

  • By definition, students can be included in more than one group listed above, so the groups should not be considered as mutually exclusive.

  • The ‘Graduation Summary Table’ above is presented in alphabetical order only, and the ‘Graduation by Year’ plots show only the data for the selected group (as well as the overall WMU graduation).

Groups included (click name for website):

  • First Generation Students: Students whose parents did not complete college. Data are based on parent’s education data as reported on the FAFSA. Students who did not submit a FAFSA are considered as unknown and are not counted as first generation students.

  • Honors College: The Lee Honors College is home to more than 1,700 high-achieving students who are completing programs of study in every one of WMU’s seven academic colleges. Report only includes FTIACs enrolled in the honors college at census.

  • Student Employees (1st Year): Students who had at least one appointment as a student employee in any department or office during their first year.

  • Underrepresented Minorities: Includes students whose primary ethnicity is Hispanic, Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander. Also includes students whose primary ethnicity is Two or More Races where at least one of their self-reported races is Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander.

  • Military and Veterans: Includes military and veteran students classified in one of the following categories: Active Duty Military, Veterans Previously Served or Discharged, Military Guard or Reserves, and Military Vocational Rehab.
