2006 Air Race Classic 'flight log'

June 20, 2006

by Courtney Hedlund and Leslie Treppa

BRYAN, Texas--The Air Race started off great in Mesa! We took off a bit after 8 a.m. It was a rush! One take off right after another. We got excited even though we were passing slower aircraft along the way--the race is based on handicaps not who gets to the finish line first. Things went smoothly for take off and getting on course.

At our first stop, Santa Teresa, N.M., they were great hosts and very enthused that we (the racers) were there. All the stops so far have been great, but at Santa Teresa, they were pretty prepared for the mad rush of airplanes. Leslie and I each have our own duties so that we can have a quick turn around if we need to, and that is what we did today.

We stopped in Ozona, Texas, and flew on to Bryan, Texas, where we are spending the night. We would have liked to get in another leg today, but we were running out of daylight. Hopefully strong tailwinds will prevail in our favor tomorrow.

We will take on Bastrop, La., tomorrow and see how things go from there. We know there is a front that is producing some weather along the route that will hopefully break long enough for us to get through.

Another adventure starts tomorrow! Go WMU!
