Few campus services open during holiday recessDec. 15, 2009 KALAMAZOO--Except for essential and emergency services, Western Michigan University will be closed beginning at noon Thursday, Dec. 24, and will reopen Monday, Jan. 4. Holiday recess begins with the end of fall semester Dec. 19, and many campus services are already closed or have reduced hours through the start of spring semester. Public events on campus during holiday recess include School of Music concerts, Bronco hockey at Lawson Ice Arena, and Bronco men's and women's basketball games at University Arena. Visit the Events Calendar for up-to-date listings. Residence halls reopen at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9. Spring semester begins at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 11. Listed below are hours for selected University offices and services. Faculty, students and the public are encouraged to call ahead to make sure that a particular office on campus is open. For emergencies only, contact WMU Public Safety at (269) 387-5555. Bernhard Center and Bronco Mall hours are available on the Bernhard Center Web site. All facilities and mall stores are on reduced hours Friday, Dec. 18, through Sunday, Jan. 10. The entire building is closed Sunday, Dec. 20; beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 24, through Sunday, Jan. 3; and Saturday, Jan. 9. All facilities and stores resume normal hours Monday, Jan. 11. Campus computing The Help Desk is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays Dec. 14-18 and 21-23; open 8 a.m. to noon Dec. 24; and closed from noon Dec. 24 through Jan. 3. To reduce energy costs during holiday recess and closure, temperature settings in most campus buildings will be reduced to no lower than 55 degrees. Residence halls that are vacant will be set back starting Dec. 19. Classrooms will set back beginning Dec. 20. Office spaces will be set back starting Dec. 25. All areas will be back to the normal temperature setting of 70 degrees by Jan. 4, when the University reopens. Also to reduce costs, parking lots outside unoccupied buildings and student commuter lots will not be plowed during the recess and closure periods.
