Louis Govatos

Louis Govatos, a longtime educator and former Western Michigan University faculty member, has died, it was recently learned. He was 99.

Govatos joined the faculty in 1952 and retired in 1977 after 25 years of service to the University. The professor emeritus of education and professional development taught courses such as educational psychology and human growth and development.

Prior to coming to WMU, Govatos was an elementary school teacher in Corpus Christi, Texas, and an elementary and high school teacher in Midland, Mich. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a member of the Coast Guard.

After retiring, Govatos moved to Traverse City, Mich., and later, to Naples, Fla. Services were held in Traverse City. Memorial donations may be made to the Traverse City Orthodox Mission Church.
