WMU closed out the regular season Sunday with a 2-1 loss at Miami University, but had already clinched the regular season conference title with a 5-2 win at Miami one day earlier. WMU advances as the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio. The Broncos' first tournament contest is Wednesday, May 11, at 1:30 p.m. against No. 8-seeded Kent State.
"These kids made a major statement early in the season to make a mental change to our game. I really believe the Missouri Tournament was our turning point. Everyone got on board as a unit, and you don't win championships unless you play as a unit," said coach Kathy Leitke. The Broncos have claimed three of their four regular season titles during Leitke's 11 years as head coach.
WMU was 20-27 overall for the regular season and 14-6 against MAC opponents and has now registered at least 20 wins in a season for the ninth time under Leitke and the 27th time in program history.
Depending on the outcome of Wednesday's tournament contest, WMU will face either No. 4-seeded Ball State or No. 5 Eastern Michigan at either 11 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 12. The MAC tournament champion earns the conference's automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
The MAC will provide live stats for all tournament games, which can be followed through wmubroncos.com.
