William Stiefel III

Longtime Western Michigan University engineering professor William Stiefel III died June 3. He was 81.

After a short time in the Air Force, he received a bachelor's degree from Drexel University and a graduate degree from Lehigh University. He was one of the 13 original faculty members at Duchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He joined the mechanical and aeronautical engineering faculty at WMU in 1964, and served on the Faculty Senate and various boards during his WMU career. He retired in 1994 with emeritus status.

Stiefel also taught in Ibadan, Nigeria; Kabul, Afghanistan; and Seoul, South Korea; and traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia and South America.

A visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, in the Life Story Center at the Life Story Funeral Homes, Betzler-Kalamazoo.

Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
