Black Arts Festival features culture, music, arts and crafts

Black Arts Festival July 28-31
KALAMAZOO--Music, dancing, singing, poetry reading, and arts and crafts are highlights of this year's Black Arts Festival Thursday through Sunday, July 28-31, at various locations in downtown Kalamazoo. In its 26th year, the event showcases African American artistic ability and cultural heritage.

Thursday, July 28

Free children's activities geared for ages 6 to 12, including free hot dogs and drinks, carnival games, face painting, instrument petting zoo and live entertainment, Arcadia Creek Festival Place, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Friday, July 29

Storytelling workshop, third-grade-age children and older, Downtown Kalamazoo Public Library, Van Duesen Room, noon to 1:15 p.m. Free.

Creative writing workshop, middle school children and adults, Downtown Kalamazoo Public Library, Van Duesen Room, 1:30 to 3 p.m. Free.

Storytelling and poetry reading, Epic Center, 359 S. Kalamazoo Mall, 6 to 8 p.m. Free.

Live entertainment, slam poetry, dancing, singing and instrumental music for ages 16 and older, Epic Center, 359 S. Kalamazoo Mall, 8:30 to 11 p.m. Free.

Saturday, July 30

Live entertainment, fashion show, family fun, and original arts and crafts booths, Bronson Park, noon to 6 p.m. Free.

Mini Film Fest, Downtown Kalamazoo Public Library, Van Duesen Room, noon to 5 p.m. Free.

Live Jazz, D.J. music, card games and tournaments, for ages 25 and older, Epic Center, 359 S. Kalamazoo Mall, 8 p.m. to midnight. Admission $15. Call (269) 349-1035 for information on discount tickets.

Sunday, July 31

Gospel music, including local Christian dancers, musicians, soloist and choirs, Bronson Park, noon to 5 p.m. Free.
