KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's Facebook page has more than 30,000 fans, double the number one year ago, and third most among Michigan's public universities.

Tops among Michigan universities in Facebook fans are the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and Michigan State, both of which have substantially larger student and alumni populations. WMU is well ahead of the remaining Michigan universities in Facebook fans.

"The growing number of fans, comments and 'likes' demonstrate that we're giving Broncos the kinds of useful information and news they want on our page," says Tonya Durlach, assistant director of electronic communication. "We're not trying to win a social media popularity contest, but it's important for the University to have a credible presence, and we have that."

From the University's page, fans can link to two-dozen official pages for the recreation center, financial aid, sustainability, WMUK and a variety of other WMU-related fan pages. Official pages are those registered with the Office of University Relations.

WMU's Facebook page is managed by Durlach and supported by contributing students and staff in admissions and university relations.
