Erika Zadins, a former Western Michigan University staff member, died July 21. She was 95.

Zadins, of Amherst, Mass., joined the WMU staff in 1956 and retired in 1976 as assistant director of registration.

With the Soviet Red Army occupying their native Latvia, Zadins fled to Germany with her husband, two daughters and two sisters near the end of World War II. She immigrated to Kalamazoo five years later.

Zadins earned a bachelor's degree and master's degree from WMU while employed by the University. She moved to Florida after retiring, and moved to Massachusetts in 1998.

The family will have a private burial in Smiltene, Latvia. Visit the Douglass Funeral Service online to make a memorial guestbook entry.
