Myrl J. Helwig

Myrl J. Helwig, a former Western Michigan University staff member, died Sunday, July 31, at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. She was 83.

Helwig, of Kalamazoo, joined the staff in 1981 and retired in 1993 as a secretary II in electrical and computer engineering. Prior to that, she had worked at the Fetzer Broadcasting Co. and U.S. Rubber Co.

Along with her husband Ron, Helwig was active in the Kalamazoo County Republican Party. She served as precinct delegate, was treasurer for eight years and attended four national conventions. She and Ron were honored with the Diamond Award for their contributions to the Kalamazoo County GOP in 2003.

Burial took place Aug. 4 in Saint Edward Catholic Cemetery in Mendon, Mich. Visit the Eickhoff Funeral Home online to make a memorial guestbook entry.
