Peace During War, a documentary produced and directed by Jennifer A. Machiorlatti with Kalamazoo residents and co-producers Michael Wilder and Yafinceio Harris, was selected for the Waterfront Film Festival (South Haven, June 12 to 15). The documentary short features Wilder and Harris, founders of Peace During War, a youth mentoring and gang violence prevention program in Kalamazoo. The film production team included School of Communication students, several of whom were awarded College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities Awards for their work as production manager, cinematographers, production assistants and content editors. Peace During War was funded by the Fetzer Institute, Kalamazoo, Mich.
Congratulations to Katelyn Sandor, who was awarded the School of Communication's Graduate Student Research and Creative Scholar Award AND Graduate Teaching Effectiveness Award at the 2013-14 WMU Graduate College Honors Convocation on April 24.
Congratulations to Bryleigh Loughlin, a 2014 Presidential Scholar, representing the School of Communication. Loughlin is one of 47 WMU seniors recognized this year for outstanding academic and artistic achievements and promise. The Presidential Scholar designation is the highest academic recognition an undergraduate student is able to receive at WMU.
The School of Communication is pleased to announce the 2014 recipients of the Peter and Laurel Northouse Leadership Scholarship, Elizabeth Blasko and Michelle Mayfield. Both Blasko and Mayfield demonstrate outstanding leadership in the School of Communication program, in and out of the classroom. The Northouse Scholarship will help support Blasko and Mayfield as they continue in their studies and prepare for a career in communication.
Dr. Steve Lipkin’s newest film “Tunnels” has been selected as a finalist in the New Hope Film Festival screen writing competition and is a finalist in the Sacramento International Film Festival's American Screenplay Challenge.
