Professor Emeritus, WMU Department of Dance

David Curwen fell in love with ballet after taking a Gen-Ed class his junior year at Trinity College in Hartford CT. He started his formal dance training the following summer on full scholarship at the School of the Hartford Ballet and was asked to join the Hartford Ballet’s apprentice company just a few months later. After three years of training and apprenticeship, David joined the Maryland Ballet which started a 12-year professional career dancing for five companies. It is also where he met his future wife, Sharon Garber. Retirement from dancing led to five years of production work backstage for Fort Worth Ballet. In 1993, David joined the ballet faculty of the Interlochen Ballet Faculty. Two years later he joined Shari on the faculty of Western’s Department of Dance, where he taught, rehearsed and choreographed for the next 25 years. David is now in his second year of retirement and is enjoying family and friends, travel and attending cultural events.
