Dr. Moi Mooi Lew

2020 Multicultural Advocate Award for Global Engagement

Dr. Moi Mooi Lew, faculty specialist in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Educational Studies, has served on the faculty since 2016. She is the founder and program coordinator for the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Chinese as a Second Language program.

Dr. Lew has created and sustained partnerships between WMU and multiple Chinese universities—all in service of promoting greater cross-cultural understanding among K-12 students in Michigan. Due to Dr. Lew’s efforts, WMU now offers either dual Master Degrees or Bachelor/Master Degrees in partnership with nine Chinese Universities and a tenth pending. She is also working to build similar partnerships with universities that serve native Chinese speakers in Malaysia, Taiwan, and Singapore. Dr. Lew obtained a federal grant for more than $100,000 to fund the Michigan STARTALK Chinese Student Academy which brings together 6-12 students with teacher candidates from the MAT Chinese as a Second Language program.

She has also collaborated with the Kalamazoo Public Library to establish a Chinese language program for patrons of all ages, created the curriculum for the Kalamazoo Chinese Academy, and established multiple school and university partnerships in West Michigan for the placement of Chinese teacher candidates. Her current research focuses on comparing the teacher education framework at WMU with the one at National Technology University in Singapore.
