Acceptance speech
My parents were not college graduates, but they encouraged me to love learning and reading. Teachable moments were ever present in my childhood. When I was attending MSU for my undergraduate degree, my mom got so excited about the campus that she decided to go to college too. Self-doubt plagued her until she earned her associates degree from Glen Oaks Community College then transferred to WMU to earn her bachelor’s degree in Social Work. Her final triumph was earning her master’s degree in Social Work. I am proud to carry on my mom’s legacy of learning and embracing failure as opportunity. Thank you for selecting me to receive this special award. I proudly join my mom as a WMU alumni.
