William C. Wright

2020 Undergraduate Rising Star Award Recipient

William C. Wright, a major in special education, is extremely involved in both the WMU community and the local education community. He is a Funding the Advacement of Minorities in Education (FAME) and a Future Educator Program Scholar who models exemplary academic and extra-curricular outcomes for his peers.

He is a Title I paraprofessional at Woods Lake Elementary School in Kalamazoo, a coach for junior varsity men’s basketball at Mattawan Consolidated Schools, and volunteers with the Kalamazoo Public Schools (KPS). He also works at the Bernhard Center on campus and is the President and co-founder of the WMU Registered Student Organization Future Teachers of Color (FTC). Wright identified a need for mentorship, support, and professional identity for students of color and began reaching out to community partners, like KPS, to provide sponsorship and guest speakers for the twice-monthly FTC member meetings. These meetings introduce teacher preparation students to veteran educators and provides a network of support.

His work has been featured in several local media outlets and will help build a pipeline of teachers of color for KPS. Wright balances his commitments with a finesse and maturity that exceeds that of his peers and even many experienced professionals. He interacts with poise, ethics, and dedication that represents the CEHD and WMU in a positive light.
