Protect seniors in the Year of Elder Abuse Prevention
The Western Michigan University Center for Gerontology is part of the Kalamazoo County Elder Abuse Prevention Coalition, which was formed in 2013—the Year of Elder Abuse Prevention. The Year of Elder Abuse Prevention was developed by the U.S. Administration on Aging to encourage national, state and local organizations to protect seniors and raise awareness about elder abuse, neglect and exploitation.
Every year an estimated 2.1 million older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect or exploitation. And that's only part of the picture: Experts believe that for every case of elder abuse or neglect reported, as many as five cases go unreported.
