WMU students create apiary, study the imperiled honeybee

A majority of the student body voted in favor of the $8 per semester fee to fund green projects, and students successfully won WMU Board of Trustees approval to support setting up the fund. Nearly 60 percent of the proceeds from this fee go to stoke the grant fund, with the balance supporting a Green Jobs initiative as well as providing supplemental funding for the WMU Office for Sustainability. Just as members of Students for a Sustainable Earth did, any WMU student may seek grants for projects that contribute to the University's culture of sustainability.

GVSU, WMU join forces for study of family owned businesses

Road trip introduces college talent to Michigan engineering firms

Participants will visit four companies, including Stryker Corp . in Kalamazoo, Gentex Corp. in Zeeland, a Consumers Energy generating complex along the Lake Michigan shoreline near West Olive, and Chrysler in Auburn Hills. Walter Thompson, a global advertising and marketing agency, all while completing her degree in advertising and promotion, gave Kirsten the upper hand when landing her first professional job, working in account services at J. Walter Thompson. After a few years focusing on a diversified client-base including White Castle restaurants and Great Lakes Crossing Outlets, Kirsten decided to make a change.

Food justice scholar to host day of events

Taylor's research supports sustainability endeavors such as building healthy and just food systems in Michigan and beyond, as well as diversifying and increasing access to green jobs. According to Romand Coles of Northern Arizona University's Program for Community, Culture and Environment, Dr. Taylor "is doing absolutely amazing food justice scholarship and work on the ground in many communities and campuses across Michigan."

WMU once again among nation's 'Best for Vets' colleges

Also in December, the University learned that it is once again on the list of "military friendly" schools compiled by the publication Military Advanced Education. And earlier this year, G.I. Jobs magazine included WMU among its top 15 percent of colleges for vets. "We are proud of these designations," says WMU President John M. Dunn . Cumming named to lead Registrar's Office at WMU

Cumming, who has held the position on an interim basis since late 2010, will oversee the Registrar's Office, which is responsible for the accuracy and security of all student records as well as course registration, class and facility scheduling, graduation audits, the preparation of transcripts and oversight of federal student privacy law compliance. She has been a staff member in the office for 20 years. KALAMAZOO—A public information session has been scheduled at Western Michigan University for people interested in learning about the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme International, which brings native English speakers to Japan to teach English and help with internationalization projects. Kellogg internship program emphasizes relationships

According to Curtis, the customer and logistics services area hires between eight and 12 new interns each year. “Better than half of the interns have been offered full-time job opportunities with Kellogg’s,” says Curtis. Kellogg’s customer and logistics services area has had an internship program for many years and now regularly employs more than 20—typically, nearly 70 percent of these are from WMU.
