Current Students

Program requirements

  • Complete all scheduled appointments and class commitments.
  • Consult Alpha staff before dropping or adding classes.
  • Attend required engagement events.
  • Meet regularly with your Alpha peer mentor throughout first year.

In the first year, Alpha Program students

  • Attend summer orientation and schedule classes with Alpha staff.
  • Attend the Alpha Transition Program during Fall Welcome Week.
  • Attend the required number of Alpha engagement events.
  • Engage with other areas of student life.
  • Enroll in an Alpha Program-specific two-credit First Year Experience course.
  • Maintain consistent communication with the Alpha Program advisor.

Peer Mentor Connection

Each Alpha Program scholar is paired with a dedicated peer mentor—current WMU students who offer guidance, encouragement, and support throughout the first year. Mentors help scholars navigate campus life, build meaningful connections, and stay aligned with their academic and personal goals. This relationship is designed to promote trust, accountability, and a strong sense of belonging from day one.

Alpha Program curriculum

Required classes for first-year Alpha students:

  • Fall: First Year Experience (2 credits).
  • Spring: UNIV 1030: Alpha Engagement courses (1 credit).
