Miller Veranda Celebration

Miller Auditorium is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception in celebration of the completion of the new Veranda overlooking the Miller Fountain Plaza on Tuesday, Oct. 3 from 5–7 p.m. There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the Kalamazoo Chamber of Commerce shortly after 5 p.m. The campus community is invited to stop by anytime between 5 and 7 p.m. to see the beautiful new veranda with accessible ramps and a grand staircase leading out onto the plaza.

Market Trends in Consumer Behavior

Dr. Thomas Weinandy, Research Economist at Upside, will present on the macroeconomic trends driving recent changes in consumer behavior and business decision making. He will share insights from Upside's digital marketplace and data from 27 billion transactions to discuss whether fast-food restaurants benefit from inflation, which businesses close early in a tight labor market, and how gas stations are responding to electrification.

Intimate Apparel follows the story of Esther, a black seamstress who lives in a boarding house for women and sews intimate apparel for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. She remains, lonely and longing for a husband and a future. Her plan is to find the right man and use the money she's saved to open a beauty parlor where black women will be treated as royally as the white women she sews for.

"First Voice Generation" documentary screening and Q&A with filmmaker Cynthia Martinez

"First Voice Generation" tells the stories of three Latinx high school students in Holland, Mich., who are part of the TRiO Upward Bound Program. It highlights their dreams of being the first in their families to go to college and how the COVID-19 global pandemic and virtual learning exacerbated their struggles.

Join filmmaker and WMU alumna Cynthia Martinez for a free screening of her documentary, followed by a question-and-answer session with Martinez.
