General summary

Directs and coordinates the operation and maintenance of radio broadcasting equipment in compliance with FCC regulations.

Major duties

  • Directs and coordinates the operation and maintenance of radio broadcasting equipment in compliance with FCC regulations. Ensures University-sponsored radio stations remain on the air and are fully functional.
  • Engineers and produces in-and-out of studio recordings.
  • Oversees support and maintenance of radio automation system, file servers, studio production workstations, and related application software. Researches and deploys new software applications for all station-computing systems.
  • Serves as primary point of contact for digital service providers and vendors.
  • Directs and coordinates operation and maintenance activities of engineering support staff. Collaborates with station personnel to develop long-range projects and strategic plans, including signal expansion, technical and infrastructure upgrades, communications, and facilities development.
  • Serves as a member of the department’s senior management team. Participates in the implementation of the strategic plan and vision, with the goal of expanding the broadcast reach of University radio stations.
  • Develops technical and training performance standards for all aspects of station operations.
  • Performs routine inspection of all radio station operations at off-site locations. Maintains good working condition for all tangible station property assets.

Required education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Five years’ relevant experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of Federal Communications Commission rules, regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Proven understanding of or experience in maintenance and repair of technology-based or broadcast systems, high power transmitters and IT network infrastructure.
  • Experience in professional audio recording and production.
  • Proven ability to work well as a contributing team member within a complex organization.

Required other

  • Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to travel to off-campus recording sites.
  • Valid driver's license.

  • Eight years' relevant experience.
  • Ability to guide others through high-level technology and equipment operations.
  • Experience in on-air public radio fundraising.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and work under pressure.

Desired other

  • Certified Broadcast Radio Engineer or Digital Radio Broadcast Specialist (Society of Broadcast Engineers).

Physical requirements

Moderate work occasionally working in difficult position or with physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials from 25 to 50 pounds and occasionally lifting or moving materials greater than 50 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, protective clothing, ear protection, etc.
