General summary

Provides strategic leadership for and directs the operations of the Office for Sustainability.

Major duties

  • Provides leadership, makes long-term plans and directs operations of the University’s Office for Sustainability. Oversees the University’s solid waste reduction program and Research and Demonstration sites.
  • Ensures fiscal integrity of all office funds including base funding, student sustainability fee, grants and gifts. Oversees, counsels and assists on Sustainability fee utilization with Student Affairs. Develops opportunities to capture external funding through individual or foundation gifts and grant collaborations.
  • Leads data collection, analysis, public reporting and communication on the impact of sustainability activities and collaborations using internal and external campus sustainability reporting protocols and tools.
  • Creates and implements annual, student-centered events, programs and research project collaborations. Provides opportunities to develop and support student, staff and faculty sustainability leaders.
  • Leads and facilitates a University-wide sustainability committee. Serves on various divisional and University-wide committees.
  • Represents the University as a leader on sustainability issues and represents campus and community sustainability collaborations. Collaborates with University administrators, colleges, departments and units to develop and implement innovative policies and practices that advance sustainability.
  • Hires, trains and evaluates the performance of staff, student staff and graduate assistants. Resolves personnel and operational issues.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Master’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Five year’s relevant experience.
  • Supervisory or lead experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
