General summary

Leads the design, installation, record keeping and maintenance of the University's outside plant telecommunications network, and associated telecommunications end-user equipment and cabling infrastructure.

Major duties

  • Manages outside plant planning, designing, documentation of University’s telecommunication infrastructure in accordance with University and Industry standards.
  • Manages inventory and service location in the University’s service management system for telecommunications equipment, including phones, cabling, routes and paths for outside plant and internal building routes.
  • Maintains all construction management documentation and ensures appropriate reviews are completed throughout the design and construction process.
  • Designs and documents engineering and routing plans for communication infrastructure.
  • Communicates with outside agencies for cabling infrastructure.
  • Engineers copper cable routing, removal and reroutes associated with new buildings, remodeling and demolition.
  • Converts legacy drawings to electronic versions, making them accessible for better access and collaboration.
  • Hires, trains, evaluates, and supervises staff and student employees.

Minimum qualifications

Required education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Three years' relevant experience.
  • Experience in telecommunications.
  • Experience in outside plant engineering.
  • Experience with computer aided design software.
  • Experience with mapping software.
  • Experience with analytics software.
  • Experience with service management systems.

Desired qualifications

Desired experience

  • Experience with design and installation of telecommunication networks.
  • Construction management experience.

Desired other

  • Relevant industry certification.

Physical requirements

Light work with some physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds, but rarely moving more than 25 to 50 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, protective clothing, ear protection, etc.
