General summary

Performs course schedule development and student advising for a large or complex department.

Major duties

  • Constructs departmental course schedules. Identifies the number of sections offered, assigns faculty and teaching assistants to sections and hires part-time instructors. Assists with the supervision of teaching assistants and substitutes in classrooms as necessary. Makes decisions on overloading sections and raising class capacities.
  • Assists students with questions on courses and placement exams. Evaluates all mathematics transfer credit and ensures students meet prerequisites. Assists faculty in completing major and minor slips. Hires and supervises tutors.
  • Assists with the recruitment of graduate students and represents the department at recruiting functions. Meets with prospective students and parents.
  • Supervises placement testing and math advising for incoming freshman. Completes all curriculum change forms and monitors progress through University channels.
  • Maintains and updates the department’s webpage. Assists faculty in developing course pages. Designs, maintains and updates a computer database to facilitate the development of departmental course schedules, faculty workloads, enrollment history and trends of student summaries.
  • Prepares the departmental newsletter, brochures and reports. Revises the undergraduate handbook. Plans departmental events.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Three years' relevant experience.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
