General summary

Plans and supervises flight operations for the College of Aviation.

Major duties

  • Hires, trains and evaluates performance of full-time and part-time flight instructors and ensures their compliance with Federal Aviation Administration regulations.
  • Prepares, reviews and approves flight schedules and instructor assignments.
  • Reviews and approves records of student progress in both ground and in-flight instruction.
  • Provides flight instruction and conducts in-flight progress evaluations.
  • Provides ground instruction.
  • Advises and counsels students regarding academic progress and career planning.
  • Participates in safety planning and instruction.
  • Manages vendors or contractors providing support to flight instruction.
  • Serves as pilot-in-command on scheduled non-instructional flights.
  • Participates in developing and evaluating academic and business plans for the College.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Five years’ relevant experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Aviation industry experience.

Required other

  • Federal Aviation Administration certifications: Commercial Pilot Certificate,Airplane Single Engine Land (ASEL), Airplane Single Engine Sea (ASES) and Airplane Multi Engine Land (AMEL).
  • Federal Aviation Administration Instrument Instructor ratings: Certified Flight Instructor, Certified Flight Instructor – Instrument, Airplane Single Engine (ASE) and Airplane Multi Engine (AME).
  • Pilot and Instrument ratings for relevant aircraft.
  • Must be available to provide instruction or serve as pilot-in-command outside of normal business hours.
  • Must meet Federal Aviation Administration physical and medical standards for flight licensure.

Physical requirements

Light work with some physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds, but rarely moving more than 25 to 50 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, protective clothing, ear protection, etc.
