Graduates are eligible for licensure in the state of Michigan, so they can enter the workforce after graduation. Or they may choose to continue their education toward the Master of Social Work degree, which also is offered at WMU-Southwest. Job prospects for those who earn a BSW are good. The Affordable Care Act has expanded treatment options in social work settings for large numbers of people across the country, which has created a need for more highly trained social workers.

—Western Michigan University engineering students can attend practice interviews and information sessions, have their resumes reviewed and explore a wide range of job opportunities for engineers during a recruiting event Thursday, Oct. 2 . A record number of employers are expected to participate in this year's Engineering Expo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences on the WMU Parkview Campus .

More than 84 percent of affected employees and some 800 supervisors took advantage of the invitation to provide feedback on the topic they know best—just what their jobs entail. Those job descriptions have been matched to appropriate market surveys (more than 30) to arrive at a new pay structure with fewer but broader pay categories. Over the next few weeks, the task of slotting nearly 1,300 jobs into those categories will be completed.

For example, Sanchez had an opportunity to become a resident assistant. He went to Borish to talk about it and she advised him to consider whether he had enough time to do this in addition to his job in the library. Borish finds mentoring Sanchez a very humbling experience because it keeps in perspective the opportunities she has had compared to students with a foster care background who are just getting started in college.

Recent TRiO FESP Activity
College of Education and Human Development
TRiO FESP is working with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Kalamazoo to create a facilitated pilot program in the summer for 25 middle school students. It will assist the students in maintaining or raising math and literacy success and will teach job readiness skills. TRiO FESP students will be paid for their summer employment funded through a grant from the Greg Jennings Foundation. Nine TRiO FESP students graduated in December of 2013 and 28 made the Dean’s List for the fall 2013 semester.
