Larry held many jobs during his twenty year career which included Ground Ambulance Company Executive Officer; Medical Clinic Executive Officer Camp Zama, Japan; Commander, 431st Medical Detachment (Helicopter Ambulance) at Fort Knox, Kentucky; Commander Flat Iron, Fort Rucker Alabama; and he Commanded a Combat Support Hospital.

He has served as Detachment, Battery, Company, Battalion, and Brigade and Post Commander. Burchard says the best military job he ever had was the Brigade Command position in Wyoming, Michigan, where he led more than 3,000 men and women in the Michigan National Guard. He says the best civilian job was serving as superintendent of schools at Lake City, Michigan, a position he held for 15 years until he retired in 2005.
