This will be my third trip to Japan, therefore you might say that I should be accustomed to the culture, navigation, and the environment, but my last trip to Japan was 5yrs ago. My first study abroad was through WMU’s Religion & Culture in Japan program. Not only did I learn about Japan’s various religions I also fell in love with traditional Japanese cuisine. 3 months after the initial study abroad I went to Ritsumeikan University, a small college situated in Kyoto. While there I took a class in ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement) and fostered my love for kaiseki ryōri (traditional multi-course Japanese dinner). Now I am bound for Tokyo to study at Keio University. 5yrs ago my study abroad preference read as Keio, Ritsumeikan, Daito Bunka. I wasn’t selected for my first choice, but having heard about opportunities to study abroad twice I was determined to aim for my prime choice. I am overwhelmed with nostalgia as I think about my time at Ritsumeikan and I know that with this upcoming study abroad that I will be facing the unknown. Everything that I have come to expect in Kyoto will be challenged with the new expectations of Tokyo.
