Mississippi Turning

This event brings together rapper and advocate Genesis Be and Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Assistant Chief of Police Victor Green for a compelling discussion on the importance of viewpoint diversity. The event will feature an advance screening of the documentary Mississippi Turning, which follows Genesis Be and a former Mississippi high school classmate as they find common ground over the confederate symbol on the state flag, leading a campaign to change Mississippi’s flag.

Genesis Be

A dynamic artist and advocate, uses her music, poetry, and art to heal divided communities and challenge oppressive systems. Raised in Mississippi by a Black father and White mother, she draws inspiration from her grandfather, civil rights activist Reverend Clyde Briggs, to focus on racial healing and civil discourse. Be’s activism includes lobbying for the removal of the Confederate flag from Mississippi’s state flag and continues to spark difficult conversations on race and identity through her work.

Victor Green

Currently serves as the Assistant Chief of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, oversees Community Affairs, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and Professional Standards, bringing over 25 years of government and community affairs experience. After 15 years as Director of Community Relations at Wayne State University, Green returned to KDPS, where his career previously included roles as a Public Safety Officer, SWAT negotiator, and Inspector of Professional Standards. A certified Diversity Professional and Moral Courage leader, Green lectures on diversity, ethics, and communications, and continues to foster partnerships and train public and private sectors across Michigan.
