About Us
The Black Faculty and Staff Council (BFSC) at Western Michigan University advances an affirming, inclusive, and empowering environment for Black faculty, staff, and administrators while contributing to the success and well-being of the entire University community. Centered on the flourishing of Black colleagues and students, BFSC collaborates across WMU to strengthen equity, belonging, and institutional excellence.
Mission
To strengthen the campus climate for Black faculty, staff, administrators, and students.
Vision
A Western Michigan University where equity is the standard, belonging is experienced by all, and Black excellence is recognized, supported, and celebrated.
Goals
- To support the retention and advancement of Black faculty, staff administrators, and students.
- To increase engagement among the members of the Black community.
- To proactively address issues of the Black community.
- To advocate for the educational success of Black students.
- To provide a platform for Black faculty, staff, administrators, and students to communicate with the University community and Senior Leadership.
Action: Building a "Campus of Choice"
Opportunity
- Assisting more students in exceeding the current WMU 54% graduation rate*
- Closing the Black student graduation rate (currently nearly 24% behind White students).*
- Providing mentor and counseling engagement to Black students.
- Strengthening initiatives to combat instances of institutional and/or systemic bias.
Representation
- Raising the ratio of Black faculty, senior administrators, directors, and staff.
- Identifying and presenting qualified Black talent to the administration for hiring.
- Building the retention of Black faculty and staff, increasing promotion and tenure.
Campus Environment
- Creating a sense of belonging among WMU Black faculty, staff, and students.
- Strengthening personal and professional development for faculty, staff, and administrators.
Community, Donor, and Alumni Engagement
- Supporting regional community intercultural awareness activities.
- Expanding partnerships with community organizations throughout southwest Michigan.
- Increasing engagement with black donor and alumni in the Black community throughout Michigan and beyond.
